Born in Kyoto in 1983 and raised in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Nishimura’s path toward violin making began with his background as a trumpet player in a school wind ensemble. An unexpected encounter with a television documentary on David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, sparked his fascination with the violin. During high school, while traveling to meet both Japanese and international luthiers in pursuit of his craft, he taught himself to build two violins.

In 2002, drawn to the style of the Milanese school led by Garimberti, Nishimura entered the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan, studying violin making under Paola Vecchio and Giorgio Cossio, and varnishing techniques under Marco Imer Piccinotti.

In 2007, he moved to Cremona, where he was deeply inspired by the work of world-renowned violin maker Davide Sora and began studying with him.

In 2010, Nishimura won first prize in the violin category and third prize in the viola category at the National Stringed Instrument Making Competition in Italy.

In 2014, he organized a quartet concert in Singapore, performing on instruments of his own making before government officials and ambassadors from various countries.

In 2018, he launched the ANIMA Project in collaboration with the Museo del Violino in Cremona and its acoustic and chemical research laboratories, serving as a principal researcher. That same year, he began volunteering in Borneo, participating in the JPO Foundation’s music education project for children in Kota Kinabalu.

In 2021, he lectured at the Acoustical Society of Japan on the acoustic evolution of the violin.

In 2022, he appeared in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage video archives and served as a member of its expert committee.

In 2023, his interview for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage program was published in book form, featured as the concluding interview.

In 2025, at the request of legendary cellist Sadao Harada, founding member of the Tokyo String Quartet, Nishimura undertook the reproduction of the rare 1743 G.B. Guadagnini cello known as the “von Khoner.” The project, in collaboration with the research laboratories of the Museo del Violino in Cremona, involved advanced acoustic and varnish analysis, ultra-precise 3D scanning, and 3D printing technology.

Nishimura’s workshop is located in the birthplace of Claudio Monteverdi, the first composer in history to specify the violin in his scores. His instruments are played as primary concert instruments by leading soloists and principal members of major orchestras worldwide.
